Progressives: Humanitarians?

Even though they have done a pretty good job convincing the masses that they(Progressives) are the humanitarians among us, their own words, actions, and history should prove that notion is completely false.

In fact, one action, one massive action should speak volumes to all who read this.

On January 1st, 1972, EPA Administrator William Ruckelshaus became the Hitler of our time, when against the will of the scientific community, he unilaterally banned the use of DDT to combat malaria, and hence sentenced 100's of millions to death, misery, and eternal poverty.

Here may be some insight as to why.

As recently as 2005, 500 million people around the world (approximately one-twelfth of the earth’s population) were contracting malaria on an annual basis; and each year, 2 to 3 million of them died as a result. Since the 1972 U.S. ban on DDT, more than 50 million people—about 90 percent of whom resided in sub-Saharan Africa, and most of whom were children younger than five—have died of malaria.

And here is the justification.

former (1969-1985) Sierra Club director Michael McCloskey said (in 1971) that his organization “wants a ban on pesticides, even in countries where DDT has kept malaria under control ... [because by] using DDT, we reduce mortality rates in underdeveloped countries without the consideration of how to support the increase in populations.”

In a similar spirit, Club of Rome director Alexander King wrote in 1990: “My chief quarrel with DDT in hindsight is that it greatly added to the population problem.”

There is tons of evidence that DDT is harmful! It causes premature birth for one. Which still doesn't address your core point which is an attempt to claim the EPA does more harm than good. I don't worry about my drinking water though, do you? Pollution is way down in the US. We know smog kills. we know that rivers can catch fire. we know that fish can be mutated and we know it can taint your food supply, we know your tap water can catch fire too.. So there is a lot of stuff that's in play here, you can't just pick one thing out and claim that this is proof and ignore everything around it.

reck....in this case yes....in a passive aggressive sort of way.

sean....I would take premature birth over premature death anyday.

sean_renaud said 11 months ago ...

So would I. But I wouldn't choose unsafe drinking water for my country over death in another country. I'm American first, and I can't help anybody else if I can't help myself. I'd love to start setting up water purification in Mexico, Africa, India and South America. I'd love to start getting those people fed, currently we have a hard enough time convincing people that Americans are entitled to food and shelter however so until we can get past that hurdle those people get to suffer.

really d6? Hitler intended to kill jews. The person banning DDT did not intend to kill anyone, and it's questionable whether you can even assign responsibility for malaria deaths to that person.

If a conservative repeals some clean air law, and 1 more million people die of asthma, are they responsible for those deaths?

d6fer said 11 months ago ...

Do progressive believe the Earth is over populated?

sean_renaud said 11 months ago ...

I'm sure there are people who think that, but nobody with any real power. It's like asking do Conservatives think the poor deserve to die? Sure there are social darwinists out there but really whenever pressed nobody seems to actually scream that we need to stop people from eating or kick them out of the emergency room. IF you use real words instead of code words like entitled people don't think that nor believe that.

d6fer said 11 months ago ...

I pointed out two of them in the post that had direct involvement.

sean_renaud said 11 months ago ...

Pretty sure those folks are dead and still a minority. Like I said I could point out all sorts of nasty conservatives but I don't, when avoidable, extreme examples. I use examples that can be replicated and pointed to. Which congressman or senator do you think believes that? Which prominent figure? Someone who can be pointed to and said, "why do you accept this guy?"
