Obama's birth in the news again?

not sure how other states work, but in CA birth records are public record, just like death records. Not sure if the actual certificate is available to just anyone, but confirming the birth is a matter of filling out a couple of forms. I agree that Obama should just put the issue to rest if he wants to avoid having another issue to fight about.

I agree.....It just makes me wonder if maybe they think that if they can label opposition as "birthers", then the voters will reject those who pick up that mantra.

I only see two possible answers here.....that one, or he was born elsewhere.

Because this is what Hawaii usually provides in these cases. He's produced more than McCain has to prove he's a citizen. Why then aren't we demanding the same of McCain? Color of skin maybe?

But if there is indeed a birth certificate, then just get it and shut everyone up!

As I understand it (was listening to the news, Conservative at least as much as it gets in California) and in Hawaii the records are only released if you have a legal reason to want to see them. So the governor doesn't have a right and Obama (while I'm certain he could override the law he is the fuckin' Pres) might not have a reason unless taken to court and or during the election when his eligibility is a legal question not an annoying one.

My personal opinion though is that Obama knows it's there and simply has decided that the most efficient way to keep his momentum is to let the Birthers keep coming up with crazy claims. I think he's just handing a bunch of guys rope and saying "here hang yourselfs I don't really care" because while I've found him to be quite the wuss in a stand up fight I suspect he's not above poisoning the kool-ade. This just makes the right look stupid to the middle and serves it's own purpose. Ultimately the citizenship of his mother has NEVER been questioned and thus he could have been born on Krypton and sent here as a child and he'd still be a legal American citizen. At this particular moment who knows if he'd survive politically that option but the chances are pretty close to even. He's not unpopular (The lowest he's fallen is 41% and that is tied to the economy a lot more than Bush who was tied to the wars if the economy kicks up which a lot of people think it might [I don't. I think we might be stuck here until we kill current Republicans once and for all] he'll be fine.

sean......I bet there was a poll done on peoples opinion of "birthers", if that indeed is the case.

reck.......how about the press? why not just do it and get it over with? He could have done something a few years ago, but chose not to....or couldn't.

Nothing - I think it would be cool - first mix race president also an immigrant. Very modern, multi-cultural and liberal. Unless he's a terrorist, then kick him out.

@d6, sending it to the press won't stop the crazies from believing the conspiracy theory. That's how conspiracy theories work. The republican from Hawaii has said that it's legit, that's not enough. Sending it to the press won't be enough either. They'll claim the press is in on it, or there was some trick or some other craziness. Nothing will make them believe any differently. There is absolutely no reason to humor them. The official process for this has been satisfied, that is all that is needed.

If he weren't born here it would be fraud of some sort. I have no idea what the actual legal charges would be, but some kind of fraud. If it's found out that Gore really won the election against Bush what should happen?

It wasn't really the electoral college as I recall, it was the Supreme Court. Most of what I've read came to the conclusion that Gore was an idiot because he asked them to recount certain districts (where it was likely he won) instead of recounting the entire state. But oh well who gives a shit at this point.

That said if it was found out that he wasn't I'm curious what the charges would be. As far as i can tell his mother is confirmed as American so it doesn't really matter WHERE he was born anyway. I'm sure it would be fraud of some sort he'd probably get impeached just because the Dems are cowards and rather than circle the wagons they'd toss the wounded to the wolves.

After watching Meet the Press this weekend, I am thinking this is just a political move on Obama's part.....I have no idea who started this up again, but David Gregory was trying like hell ,to no avail, to get Eric Cantor to comment on it, so he could label him a "birther".

Also, why wouldn't Cantor say "this is settled, the state of Hawaii has certified that he was born thpere" ??? You can't blame David Gregory if cantor won't give a straight answer to an easy question.
